United States National Guard

The National Guard is the oldest component of the United States Armed Force and one of the nation's longest-enduring institutions. It celebrated its 370th birthday on December 13, 2006. The National Guard traces its history back to the English colonies. Responsible for their own defense, the colonists organized their able-bodied male citizens for defense.

The group of armed colonists protected their fellow citizens from attacks, invaders, and helped win the Revolutionary War in the United States. Following independence, the authors of the Constitution empowered Congress to "provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining the militia." However, recognizing the militia's state role, they reserved the appointment of officers and training of the militia to the states. Today's National Guard still remains a dual State-Federal force.

Today, tens of thousands of National Guardmembers are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Tthe National Guard continues its historic mission of providing to the individual states trained and equipped units to protect life and property. The Guard has always been the first military responder in times of domestic emergency, both because it falls under the command of the Governors in peacetime and because with over 3,000 armories and other facilities located across the nation, the National Guard is close by when disaster strikes. Hundreds of times every year, troops assist civil authorities in dealing with fires, floods, earthquakes, storms, and domestic disturbances at the state level.

NATIONAL GUARD FACTS:

Throughout history the National Guard has been responsible for the defense of the United States. General George Washington commanded the first National Guard unit against the invasion of British forces. Troops participated in the War between the States. Today, the Air National Guard provides 100 percent of the Air Force's United States homeland based air defense interceptor force. Since the September 11, 2001 (911) attacks, more than 50,000 members of the Guard have been called up by their states and the federal government for missions, both domestically and abroad.
